If you want to stay in the most popular part of the city, you should go to the Old Town (Heidelberger Altstadt). The colorful and historic buildings create a beautiful environment to live in, and you also benefit from being so close to so many great attractions.

However, the Old Town is actually quite long with Heidelberg Palace at one end (and the cable car to get there). You can follow a long pedestrian shopping street (Hauptstraße) that takes you on the other side of the Old Town to Bismarckplatz (the city’s main transport square).

The northern end of Old Town follows the Necker River and you can find the old bridge for photos. Of course, there are also many restaurants, bars, cafes and shops that you can visit in the Old Town. We really liked Heidelberg Old Town compared to other German city centers. It feels very authentic while having everything you could possibly need!
