The Kalanianaole Highway runs along the southeast coast from Waikiki to Waimanalo Beach, passing through several points of interest to keep you entertained. If you travel east from the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel, you’ll pass Diamond Head and Hanauma Bay. If you want to see the latter, you have to park your car and get off at a popular diving spot. Other attractions include the Koko Crater Rail Trail, Lanai Laut (you can see the islands of Molokai, Lanai and Maui on a clear day), Halona Hole, and Makapu’u Point. End the drive at Waimanalo Beach, a 3-mile white sand beach used as a filming location for the popular TV show Magnum, P.I. and Baywatch Hawaiʻi.

Named after the former governor of Hawaii, the John A. Burns passes through the Halawa Valley to the 5,165 meter long Tetsuo Harano Tunnel. Continue east through the mid-ridge tunnel before emerging to a spectacular view of Kaneohe and the ocean. Lined with tropical sand, rocks and mountain slopes, with waterfalls after heavy rains, this highway is not to be missed.

Kamehameha Highway runs northeast through Oahu’s central valley before crossing the northern tip of Oahu. After the hustle and bustle of the north shore, the highway continues southeast to Kaneohe. While the western section of the highway passes through popular destinations such as Haleiwa Plantation and Dole, the eastern section between Kahaluku and Kahuku is one of the island’s most beautiful nature reserves. Hugging the coast, you’ll see Mokolichi Island, or Cinnamon Hat, and Kualoa Ranch, Hollywood’s Hawaiian backle, featured in nearly 50 Hollywood movies.

See endemic, native and Hawaiian flora. The entrance to the park passes through the 400-hectare Hoomaluchia Botanical Gardens, with beautiful views of the Koolau Range. Hawaiian for “Asylum of Peace,” Homaluhia contains plants from the vast tropical regions of Hawaii, the Philippines, Malaysia, Tropical America, India and Sri Lanka, Melanesia, Polynesia, and Africa. 1. This 38-mile drive to the top of Mount Halakala on the island of Maui is an absolute thrill. Indeed, there are very few places in Hawaii—or even the entire United States—where you can ride on a cloud.

2. Oahu’s H-3 skip left Honolulu on the windward side of the island. The highway passes through the Tetsuo Harano Tunnel through the Koolau Mountains, and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported into the world of the park – perhaps because part of the movie was filmed in this area.

3. Highway 200, also known as Saddle Road, connects the cities of Kona and Hilo on both sides of the Big Island and although it is considered dangerous, today it is very beautiful and piratey.
