Houston is the best city in Texas for students looking for an affordable higher education, according to the 2021 Most Expensive Colleges list compiled by financial technology company SmartAsset.

Rice University and the University of Houston ranked first and third on the company’s list, which took into account tuition, average scholarship amount and average salary, as well as student retention rates and cost of living. No other Texas city has more than one college in the top ten. The University of Texas at Austin took second place, with the Rice Owls edging out the Longhorns for the best overall score, despite tuition at private universities being much higher.
The state’s top public university pays $10,600 a year for in-state students, Rice $47,300, and the latter lowers its sticker price with an average scholarship of $38,000. Rice graduates also earned an average starting salary of $72,000, $10,000 more than the average UT graduate.
The third-ranked University of Houston is the best value local university in Texas, with average tuition and scholarships comparable to UT Austin and an average salary of $57,000. The school moved up from No. 7 in the 2020 rankings, behind the Houston Cougars. The Texas A&M University Aggies landed in fourth place with slightly higher tuition and scholarship averages than their rivals in Austin.

The Aggies are followed by UT Dallas, Texas Tech, Prairie View A&M, LeTourneau University, Midwestern State and Texas State Lone Star in the top ten. UT Arlington and Trinity College San Antonio did not make the list this year.
