In two minutes I’m sitting at the Sagamore Pendry Baltimore, whispering a secret word to the bartender.
“Here’s your story,” he said as he poured a healthy shot of whiskey into my glass of ginger-infused fruit juice.
Okay, okay, I admit that the free cocktail is just compensation for not finishing my room. But that’s what makes the storm special.
Where To Stay In Baltimore
And that slogan is apropos – Fells Point, my love, has a lot of history. The Sagamore, which opened this spring at the Resort, was built in 1914 in the heart of this bustling waterfront district. In its early days, many immigrants to Baltimore boarded the “Rec Pier,” which served as a dance hall and social center. In the 1990s, the television series “Homicide: Life on the Road” used the large pier house as a police station; he let go until 2014, when Under Armor CEO Kevin Plank bought the property with plans for a 128-room boutique hotel. He named it after the nearby Sagamore Farm, which was the source of his spring-fed Sagamore Spirit Rye Whiskey.

On a recent Saturday night, I craned my neck outside the Sagamore Pendry to take in all of its historic brick facade, complete with Doric columns. As I emerge from the August heat under the entrance arches, I am impressed by local features such as the large mural of the fourth – and often forgotten – verse of “The Star-Spangled Banner”, written by Francis Scott Key in this port. during the War of 1812 The long corridor leading to the hall is filled with symbols of our country – the blue crab, baseball players, Edgar Allan Poe.
I stopped at the already buzzing Rec Pier Chop House, an Italian restaurant with a great view of Thames Street. (Edward Fell, the British landowner who founded Fells Point in 1763, had a soft spot for his country.) As I had a 9:45 p.m. Online booking – available for the first time – I asked if they could print me in advance. Of course, the host assured me, come anytime. It’s delicious.

My room was so new that I had to touch everything: a cloud bed, a leather sofa with octopus pillows, dark wood furniture, a cool marble sink, a charcoal fireplace, shiny accessories. The small bar attracts Marylanders with Heavy Seas and Flying Dog beer, Utz Old Bay potato chips and Kinderhook mixed nuts. (The numbers calmed my rumbling stomach, though.) A note on my bed announced that Sagamore was eco-friendly; the bathroom was stocked with soft, refillable bottles of MiN New York products, and the espresso machine came with steaming cups.

Looking out into the leafy courtyard, I decided to exercise before dinner. I was also impressed by the hotel’s high-quality treadmills, weights, rowers and other sweat-proof equipment. At the same time, I felt like a pig in a glass cage. A 24-hour fitness center is on the way to the pool, so people are always flowing. And lines of bottled water, without a water source – or even
