Internet Providers In Washington, D.c. 2022

Google Fiber is the fastest internet provider in the US and delivers consistently average speeds to its customers. With a maximum published speed of up to 2,000 Mbps and a 12-month average download speed of 167.1 Mbps, the fiber provider receives a Speed Score (ISS) of 185.2.

ISS is a way to measure internet speed performance. It is based on a combination of 90% of the provider’s average download speed and 10% of the same provider’s average download speed. We’ve compiled scores based on analyzing data from 2.6 million speed tests taken with our internet speed test tool from June 1, 2021 to June 1, 2022.

Although available in only 19 cities, Google’s fiber optic service has been the fastest internet provider since 2018, beating all competitors every year.

But other providers have also shown impressive results. Xfinity is the second fastest ISP, with advertised speeds of up to 3,000 Mbps and an ISS of 159.6. Verizon, MetroNet and AT&T all come close with scores ranging from 145.7 to 155.4.

A growing number of fiber and cable internet providers are rushing to upgrade their internet plans to multi-gigabit heights. AT&T and Ziply now offer 2,000 Mbps and 5,000 Mbps plans in some areas. Xfinity has a great (but hard to find) plan that goes up to 6,000 Mbps. Google Fiber and Frontier also have 2,000 Mbps plans. Smaller providers such as Advanced Stream and Miles Broadband offer 10,000 Mbps plans.

Most ISPs offer a maximum speed of 940 to 1000 Mbps. Nothing faster is necessary for most internet users, and high prices and limited availability can put some of these plans out of reach. Even 1000 Mbps is easy, and most have very slow speeds. But it’s clear from this push for faster speeds that higher bandwidth is a big selling point for internet users who spend more time online each year.

Take our speed test to see what kind of bandwidth you have at home. You might be better off with a faster plan.

How States Are Expanding Broadband Access

In addition to showing the fastest internet providers according to the latest data, our report also looks at long-term trends that have continued since 2018. Read our analysis on the next evolution of internet speed.

Between 2018 and 2021, major US ISPs saw speeds increase year over year. We tracked the progress of 16 ISPs over this period, and all saw significant improvements in average speed.

Fiber providers in particular have made big gains over the past five years. In 2018, Google Fiber was one of only two ISPs with average download speeds above 90 Mbps. In 2021, Google Fiber’s average download speed reached 164 Mbps, above the national average.

Small Business Internet Service

Some providers have made bigger profits by dropping DSL service to focus more on fiber internet.

DSL is widely available but has slow speeds, reaching 100 Mbps, and the number of DSL subscribers has declined in recent years. Access to fiber is very limited throughout the country. But internet companies focus on fiber networks because they are very powerful – fiber speeds are typically high at 1000 Mbps, but sometimes reach faster multi-gigabit speeds.

Verizon has been reducing its DSL offerings in recent years while laying thousands of miles of fiber-optic cable in new markets, partly to support Fio’s internet plans but also to expand its 5G wireless network.

Meanwhile, there’s been a big jump in download speeds on Verizon Fios plans — from 85 Mbps in 2018 to 145 Mbps in 2019.

Verizon Expands Internet Options For Customers

AT&T is also interested in DSL. The company briefly discontinued its DSL service in October 2020, and in March 2022, the company announced that it plans to phase out half of its DSL network by 2025 to make way for fiber and 5G.

Currently, its average download speed has increased by about 200%, from 40 Mbps in 2018 to 117 Mbps in 2021. (See more information about AT&T speeds in the section below).

While fiber providers often act as DSL providers, many DSL customers are unlikely to switch to an Internet connection. Fiber Internet is the least common type of Internet connection in the United States, and experts believe that older DSL customers tend to flock to cable Internet — a trend that has continued for at least the past decade. .

As for new fiber customers, many of them previously had cable internet and are finally making the switch thanks to things like faster speeds and more direct pricing.

Cable internet has also become faster. Xfinity’s average download speed more than doubled from 2018 to 2021, from 66 Mbps to 143 Mbps. Cox took a very big step from 51 Mbps (2018) to 135 Mbps (2021).

Cable doesn’t quite match fiber when it comes to bandwidth. Gigabit plans are not as widely available for cable as they are for fiber, and Gigabit cable plans generally cost more. Cable also lags behind fiber when it comes to charging speeds. In a cable connection, the download is usually only 10% of the upload speed, while fiber is the type of connection that offers moderate upload and download speeds.

But coaxial cable connections are much more widely available across the country than fiber, and ISPs have made technological advances in recent years to deliver better performance. Since 2013, the introduction of DOCSIS 3.1 – the technical standard that enables high-speed Internet data transmission over coaxial cable TV bases – has paved the way for fast gigabit downloads in cable connections. Recently, the pandemic has forced major cable companies like Xfinity and Cox to deliver faster speeds to meet growing consumer demands.

Of all the providers we looked at, only two were stable or slow over the past four years: HughesNet and Viasat. Both are satellite ISPs, suggesting that rural Internet speeds are lagging behind the national trend. The stagnation of DSL services has not helped rural customers, although new services such as 4G LTE Internet and Starlink may eventually improve speeds in more remote parts of the country.
