Prince Edward Island is not that big. In fact, you can cross the entire province from one end to the other in just 3 hours (and I doubt that there will ever be a traffic jam to slow you down!).

Where you stay in Prince Edward Island depends on what you want to do and what type of accommodation you are looking for. If you want to see the whole island on your visit, I recommend staying in Charlottetown and Summerside.

We stayed in Charlottetown for 5 nights and then moved to Summerside for 2 nights. So we could see the whole island without too long driving days.

Summerside is more of a harbor and waterfront town where you’ll find less regular PEI hotels and more bed and breakfast style accommodations.

Cavendish is the most touristic town on the island. In fact, this is not a city, but more of a tourist town. It is designed for a family vacation, but if you are looking for a chalet near the beach. Places to stay on Prince Edward Island in Cavendish are cottages and motels.

Prince Edward Island is small, so there aren’t many good hotels to choose from on the island.

To get the first choice of hotels in Prince Edward Island, you must book as early as possible, especially if you travel in the high season.

Charlottetown is the largest city on Prince Edward Island. That says a lot because it is still so small. You will have most things to do in and around the city itself.

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island is a good base city if you want to explore the Central Coast and East Coast.

The North Cape can still be seen from Charlottetown, but I think it’s a bit too far to see in one day. It is about a 2-hour drive each way. That means 4 hours of driving in one day and you still have time to explore. If you are interested in visiting the North Cape, I would stay in Summerside (my next recommendation).

However, Charlottetown is the most urban and busiest place in all of PEI. I’d say it’s the least touristy (but keep in mind it’s still touristy…it’s the least between Cavendish and Summerside).

Especially if you want to visit in the shoulder season (September, October, April and May). You will be lucky if many restaurants and shops are open.

We stayed at the Grand George in Charlottetown for 5 nights. From there we could perfectly explore the central and east coast of the island.

This is the best place to stay if you want to explore the north side of the island as well. This beach is a little far from Charlottetown to see, so you’ll want to stay a little closer for less driving.

There isn’t much to do in the town itself, and it pretty much shuts down in the off-season (around October to May). So it’s definitely something to be aware of.

We stayed in Summerside for 2 nights at the Summerside Inn Bed and Breakfast (and loved it!). From here we could further explore the central and northern coasts of the island.
