The food court started to get smaller. First there was a restaurant, now called the Townhouse, near a vineyard on the outskirts of town. Then came the prosperity of the city. Now interesting places are appearing in hidden places. Chief among them is Zen Bistro, a small establishment – less than 30 seats – in a chain of shops located on the main street of the city, Lodi Avenue.

Zen Bistro: You never know about Zen Bistro unless you get the inside scoop from a friend, like I did. When full, the restaurant can be deafening as the bright decor raises rather than dampens the decibels. Inside scoop: A table at 7pm will usually be quiet enough for informal conversation after the first course.

With a background in food and dining, Walter and Melissa Ng opened Zen Bistro in November. It’s popular with locals – hence my friend’s tip – but tourists love the smell of this affordable place. “We had a bear come out of Oregon the other week,” said Melissa Ng.

The menu takes cues from Asian and Californian dishes. Starters include main course ($8.50) with greens and Caesar salad ($4/$8).

My favorite dish — beef cheeks ($13) — is a warm-weather break, but N promises they’ll be back in the winter.

Ngs runs the kitchen and responds to customer requests. On a recent trip, a friend had planned to order a special pasta but was told the food was out of stock. “Here,” he said. Our server pointed his index finger at the kitchen and said he would look. Two minutes later he came back to serve traditional chicken pasta.

Tin Roof BBQ: Speaking of out of the way, Tin Roof BBQ is in an industrial building on the outskirts of town across the street from the cemetery. The unusual location doesn’t stop locals and tourists alike from packing the place for lunch with the aromas of sensual outdoor smokers.

The tri-tip sandwich ($8.79) has several sauce options, including house-made barbecue sauce topped with pickled onions. On the other hand, the smoked turkey ($8.25) comes with aioli, avocado and provolone. A side salad ($2.75 small) — including potatoes, macaroni and coleslaw — provides a nice balance to the hearty sandwich. Although only open for lunch, Tin Chit offers an extensive takeaway menu perfect for a group picnic.

Lodi Airport Cafe: You find the tasting room north of Lodi and realize it’s lunch time. What better place to stay than the Lodi Airport Cafe? The half-pound Neiman Ranch Airport Burger ($9.50) includes cheese and fries or potato salad.

Crush Kitchen & Bar: This airy downtown spot offers both indoor and outdoor food—table popcorn, air popcorn, and truffle salt, cayenne pepper, and brewer’s yeast. Starters include watermelon salad ($7/12) with arugula, fennel, red onion, pine nuts, balsamic and tangy vinaigrette; And the small pizza ($12; $13.50 with prosciutto, pancetta, sausage or pulled pork) is perfect for sharing.

Main dishes include beef, pork, lamb, fish and vegetable dishes. House-made gnocchi ($18) in a vegetable cream sauce with sun-dried tomatoes and truffle oil is very simple. Scallops with Dive Boat ($28) and various sides. During my visit, they came with delicious polenta cakes topped with pancetta, topped with baby broccoli and drizzled with a cider vinegar reduction. The small sandwich menu includes a house-made Angus chuck burger ($12) that comes out tender.

Petro: Lodi’s original place is old school – about 60 years – but it looks like it has garden beds in the kitchen.

The homemade focaccia is a local legend. Good options include the classic homemade ravioli ($16, with soup or salad) covered in a rich meat sauce, and the braised veal saltimbocca ($24, with soup, salad, pasta and vegetables). participation). The latter assumes that exercise is on your agenda.
