If you live in Johnson City, Tennessee or the Tri-Cities area, you are in luck because there are many wonderful places to visit. Johnson City flies under the radar compared to Appalachian cities in the same region, such as Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge in Tennessee, and Bryson City, Banner Elk and Asheville in North Carolina. It is usually overlooked when it comes to outdoor tourism activities such as hiking. Why not let others’ loss be your gain, because I’m here to tell you that the hiking trails near Johnson City can rival the best views of the Appalachian Mountains. Let’s look at the 8 best views below, with a bonus for entertainment.

Best Western St. Catharines Hotel & Conference Centre

Roan Mountain has so many amazing views that it was an obvious choice to top our list of the best scenic views near Johnson City. While Roane Mountain offers incredible views, if you want the best views the mountain has to offer, you should head to Carver Gap on the Tennessee-North Carolina border. From there, a 0.4-mile hike to Round Bald offers nearly 360-degree views that have been compared to those of the Swiss Alps. And if that’s not enough, take the famous Appalachian Trail to Grassy Ridge Bald, a 4.7-mile hike with beautiful views.

You can also hike a little over 2 miles west of Carvers Gap on the Appalachian Trail to find Roan High Knob. At 6,286 feet above sea level, Roan High Knob is the highest point of Roan Mountain, the highest mountain in Tennessee outside of Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Roan High Knob also boasts the highest shelter on the Appalachian Trail.

After finishing Carver’s Gap, drive back for another 15 minutes to the famous Rhododendron Gardens, where you can hike up to Roan High Bluff. Here you will see the largest rhododendron garden in the world, a dense forest similar to the forests of the Pacific Northwest, and more magnificent views of the mountains.

At 52 minutes from Johnson City, Carver’s Gap is one of the more remote drives on our list. But we think the incredible views and ease of access to the trails more than make up for the travel time.

Mount Unaka has a lot to offer. It has many amazing panoramic views, but it also has three waterfalls that are also worth visiting. But the incredible view and ease of access is what puts Mount Unaka second on our list.

The easiest views of Mount Unaka are at the beautifully named Beauty Place. Like Round Bald on Roan Mountain, the hike from the parking lot to Beauty Spot is very short and easy. So is the fact that you will go through the Appalachian Trail to access the beauty spot. The ease of access is both a blessing and a curse, as you can see incredible views without much work, but so is everyone, and so the Beauty Spot can be too busy for both to simply enjoy the spectacular views . , as well as many photographers trying to get that perfect shot of a landscape or that newly engaged couple.

If you’re not a big fan of crowds, Unaka Mountain Overlook (aka Pleasant Garden) might be for you. To access it, simply pass Beauty Spot east on Beauty Spot Gap Rd until it turns into Unaka Mountain Rd. Follow this for about 3 miles until you reach Red Fork Rd. Turn left and you are there. Of course, you can also go on excursions. It’s a 6.6-mile round trip from the Beauty Spot parking lot to the Mount Unaka lookout. The Emerald Forest between Beauty Spot and Unaka Mountain Overlook is also worth a visit, as it is famous for its ferns and wildflowers.

In the same area as Unaka Mountain Overlook, you can also access Stamping Ground Ridge and Horseback Ridge. It’s a lesser known sight compared to the Beauty Spot, but still worth checking out. While Beauty Spot faces west, Stamping Ground Ridge and Horseback Ridge face east toward Johnson City and Buffalo Mountain.

From Johnson City, Mount Unaka can be accessed in about 35-45 minutes, depending on where you’re going, making it very accessible for a day trip.

Whitehouse Cliffs Overlook is located in Rocky Fork State Park near Flag Pond, Tennessee. The incredible 360-degree views of the Rock Fork Watershed and Sam’s Gap are the reason why Whitehouse Rocks ranked number three on our list of the most incredible views near Johnson City. To claim the reward, you must hike 1 mile on the newly constructed Whitehouse Cliffs Trail, which exits just outside the Rocky Fork Trail parking lot. While a mile may seem easy enough, trust me when I say it’s a tough (but worth it) climb to the top of Mt.

On the way (about the 0.6 mile mark) don’t forget to check out the amazing view of the Whitehouse Cliffs, which seem to look over the Black Stack Cliffs right across the beautiful Rocky Fork. Once at the top, take a well-deserved rest while enjoying the magnificent mountain views and listening to the roar of Rocky Fork below. At your highest point, you will be right
